CREATIVE LEAP

Apr 30

A failure of statistical thinking is the major intellectual shortcoming of our universities, journalism and intellectual culture.

Cognitive psychology tells us that the unaided human mind is vulnerable to many fallacies and illusions because of its reliance on its memory for vivid anecdotes rather than systematic statistics. Yet pundits continue to hallucinate trends in freak events … and make wildly innumerate comparisons, such as between Afghanistan and Vietnam, or between today’s human trafficking and the African slave trade.

It’s a holdover of the literary sensibilities of our science-flunking intellectual elite, who would be aghast if someone didn’t know who Milton was, but cheerfully flaunt their ignorance of basic science and mathematics.

goonsandloons:

This is blowing my mind, maybe it’s because you know those hidden pictures pictures? Anyone? I could never do those. But this worked for me! Mind = blown.
Stare at the red dot on her nose for 30 sec, then look up at the ceiling and blink really quickly. WHAT THE!?!

Actually works. Cool

CREATIVE LEAP - jumping toward a goal

My brother sat me down toward the end of my high school career and tried to explain a concept to me:  College is not the only path.  I’d been accepted to the Business School at the University of Colorado.  Every teacher and councilor since Kindergarten had expressed exactly the opposite.  All of my friends were off to College too.  My brother had approached ancient Greece with the suggestion that Zeus may not be real.  It simply could not be fathomed!

What my brother meant to say was “Many kids going to college have some idea of what they want to do there.  Their direction can only be good - your lack of direction is probably bad.”

Would you go to college if you didn’t know what you were interested in? (or even what you were good at?)

His suggestion, not that I listened, was “take some time to see the world and find out what you like.  College will be here when you get back and then you will be in the right place to start.”

I feel like the same situation has happened with this blog.  I just started one.  I didn’t have a clue what I wanted it to be when it grew up or what its general interest might be - I just started it.  I’ve drifted along with hap-hazard postings that seem amusing to me; reposting things as if the next person cared.  This has left me with a stream of pictures and notes that are an unappealing mix of personal and spam, intriguing and mediocre.

Once again, much like that young, impressionable student - I’ve been auditing courses (or, blogs in this instance) and finding my way. I’m wiping my blog and I’m now ready to begin with a purpose!

CreativeLeap will be a watering hole for all creatives with a particular attention paid to film/video producers.  I intend to interview a variety creative professionals (and amatures) who can speak to their areas of experience.  I will provide the interviews in audio and, sometimes, video formats.  Additionally, I will engage a round-table discussion about issues that are relevant to today’s creative professionals.

Some subjects that I will be addressing in the near future:

The professional benefit of being part of a creative community.

When to invest in the expensive equipment and how it could affect your projects.

Intern to Pro - why does a comprehensive training program help your long-term career.

This is just a few of many subjects that will be coming up in the next weeks and months.  I’m eager to make this leap.  I hope you will join me.
